Ah, Mortal Kombat. Among a rising sea of Street Fighter II clones, Mortal Kombat stood out with its photorealistic characters and copious amounts of blood squirting all over the place.
While it didn't invent the idea of a fatal finishing move, it certainly put that feature on full, proud display. I still remember my Mother ripping me off of the arcade cabinet at first sight, telling me that it was a horrible thing I shouldn't be playing and enjoying. Of course, like any other kid at the time, that made it all the more appealing.
The stark difference between Mortal Kombat and other 2D fighters wasn't just the blood, dismemberment, and digitized sprites, though. The sound and music was also incredible - rich, deep bass meeting with a Kung Fu B-movie soundtrack that had never existed, cut with the sharp sound effects of martial arts strikes, mystical powers, and gongs. Here are 100 tracks of music from the game, including the arcade original and all of its home ports. Pick the system you remember hearing the most and it will be like a trip right back to the first time you ever competed in Earthrealm's doomed tournament.
