hint and clue books
Before most gamers in the world had Internet access, we relied on hint and clue books for help on beating really hard "head scratchers," usually found in point-and-click or text-based adventure games.

Sometimes you had to purchase them at your local computer / software store, other times they were included with a game and you could peek for spoilers at your own discretion. Some even had film filter "decoders" or glasses that you used to uncover the information!
As more books are found, or whenever the 15+ year mark rolls around each year past the original publication (what I consider "retro"), they will be added.
